Man shopping in a womens’ world

So here we are at the beginning of another year, 2013 and the first retail trade show of the year has already been put to bed.  The challenge as always: to find what’s new as early as we can and secure it as exclusively as possible…the personal challenge invariably is to also find something for men that isn’t a gadget with a thirty second amusement span and zero function, actually something that isn’t even a sodding gadget. What is this gadget obsession traders think the male public have?

VIPThe last few years have seen new objects of desire for women in retail such as theVIP Handbag Organiser; a clever well designed and high spec finish interchangeable handbag insert.

A simple but once again clever Hooky, which enables said handbags to be hooked to the table out of the way of general dirt and thieving hands. Hooky

Stacker system jewellery boxes; Tipsy Feet fold away pumps for tired stiletto-ed feet; scented candles that could fill a small supermarket with the variety of floral, fruity or musky scents; new jewellery collections every quarter in all styles, be it silver, gold or costume…bags for your underwear, bags for your shoes, bags for your wedding clobber, bags for those bits for the weekend; Creams, moisturisers, exfoliaters, relaxants, energisers…. and all of it entirely female targeted.

For men, we’ve had the ‘Mandle’, think candle and you’ve got it.  Three or four masculine type scents (no floral or fruity fragrances for us);

coin trayVariations in the leather coin-tray (think the perfect place to dump all the bits from you pocket) alongside all the usual suspects like cufflink-boxes, cufflinks, tie-pins, collar stiffeners, hip-flasks, scarves, socks and shaving brushes…a list your great granddad would be familiar with, and the picture of retail being a woman’s world becomes apparent. Constantly coming up with things they didn’t even know they might need, or enjoy, the female retail world is a myriad of innovation compared to the man’s retail world.

The first trade show of the year, Top Drawer or was it Pulse (they all seem to merge into one) this year was no exception and I don’t anticipate the rather monstrous NEC Birmingham Spring Fair in February to be much different…massive, multi-acre sized halls, some smelling like the ground floor of department stores, row after row, stand after stand of goodies, many new to the market – the massive majority targeted to the female retail customer.  I anticipate traipsing mile after mile mainly to do the usual business but also on the hunt for something new for men…when I say hunt, it’s probably like being in the desert with a small stick – difficult to decide which has the greater probability of success.

Still, there’s the Volume Hall to look forward to.  Items that you can’t imagine anybody wanting having to be ordered in huge amounts to ensure you can have them.  I’ve yet to see anything in 12 years that I might want…that’s not even to sell on, and this hall gets an extra day!  Strangely, most of the Sellers (Agents) and Buyers (Agents) seem to be male in this Hall. Maybe it’s where those strange high street Chain-stores source from…you know the ones…weird 1980’s lighting and a sort of ‘world has stopped spinning’ feel to them.  This time I may sit and have coffee and eavesdrop…there’s got to be some bizarre conversations going on.

Service with a smile :)

Some days you get a customer who is just that little bit extra nice and puts you in a good mood for the rest of the day. And it’s amazing how contagious your smile can be, it finds itself on each new customer that you greet and meet during the day and before you know it you are giving great service without any effort and enjoying your day at work.

Unfortunately, every now and then you get a customer who is quite frankly a rat bag and whether they mean to or not can spoil the rest of your day with their sharp tongue and bitter tones. The secret is to rise above it, but it can be so difficult. It’s easy to simmer and bluster about them when they have left, assuming you’ve been able to hold your tongue whilst they are still in the shop.

But it’s essential to shake it off and get on with your day and try your utmost to think happy thoughts. Otherwise you’ll find that scowl and growl will be as infectious as the smile was and soon all your customers will be just that little less friendly as they subconsciously feed off your bad mood. So ignore the rude customers and enjoy the lovely ones, you’ll have a much better day for it.

A little device my staff and I use is the ‘Double Ribbon Gift wrap Award’ given to our favourite customer during the day. We don’t say anything but when we think someone is really nice we reward them with extra special gift wrapping using double coloured ribbon, using our most expensive boxes and bags. We immediately know when each of us has chosen their favourite for the day by the gift wrap the customer gets. It puts a smile on our face every time. The customer never knows but next time you go shopping spare a thought for the sales staff, be nice and you just might be the best customer of the day and get that extra special treatment.

Establishing a good relationship with our suppliers

Since the beginning I’ve always made a point of checking with new suppliers if they already supply shops in my area. If they do I move on, there’s simply no point having the same products as my local competitors.  I want to offer my customers something that they can’t find elsewhere.

This used to be so much easier before the chains started stocking everything en masse and uber cheap. But that aside, I still like to offer products that the other local independent shops don’t have. I believe diversity in a local area is not only great for the customer but benefits the retailer.  If each independent retailer has a unique identity and range of products differentiating it from its neighbours, customers have access to a great shopping area and retailers don’t have to undercut each other with pricing for the same products. Unfortunately, not all retailers think this way.

BT cupcakeA couple of years ago we had problems with our Big Tomato mug range being duplicated in a nearby shop. A few polite emails and phone calls got us back on track and the problem was resolved. Having a good track record with my supplier went a long way. When I experienced the same difficulties with our Bluebell33 scented candle range, it was also resolved very quickly. Thanks to the support of our suppliers we’ve been able to maintain a great collection of ranges unique to our area. Luckily we have suppliers who understand that its not always the best market strategy to flood the market with their products.

Times are tough which means protect your assets, and that’s just what I intend to do.

Father’s Day

Who invented Father’s Day?

Credit for “Official’ Father’s day goes to Sonora Smart Dodd of USA, who invented her own celebration in 1910 in tribute to her own Father, a single parent who raised his six children.

When is it celebrated?

It is generally celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June, and the first American Presidential Proclamation recognising was made in 1966.  It didn’t become a proper National Holiday in  the USA until 1972, previous Presidents had been reluctant, some fearing the commercialization of the event. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday June 17th.

How is it celebrated?

From receiving a raised eyebrow some short ten years back in the UK, Father’s day has now become a firm fixture on the celebratory calendar, with Father’s Day Cards in the shops from mid-May, and an ever growing list of dedicated manly gifts.

Popular gift choices today are:-

  • Cufflinks, Tie-pins, Ties, Socks, Pocket Squares, and Collar Stiffeners
  • A bottle of fine Single Malt Scotch or Irish Whisk(e)y, or fine Cognac
  • A Mandle (masculine fragrance candle)
  • A coin tray to empty those overloaded trousers
  • A hip-flask for those cold winter events
  • A special wallet
  • Some manly grooming products

Confirmation – What, When and How is it celebrated?

What is a Confirmation?

The Sacrament of Confirmation is the ritual practiced by most Western Christian Denominations at the young adolescent age of 12-14, wherein the Act of Confirming one’s belief and faith is undertaken, and the commitment to the Christian Church. Through the Act of Laying of Hands (invariably by a Bishop) the Acts of Jesus and the Apostles are mirrored and the Holy Spirit is thus conferred upon the participants.

When does it happen?

The Ceremony is generally undertaken on Pentecost Sunday (50 days after Easter Sunday) when Christians celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.

It is regarded as a rite of passage for the young participants, recognizing their growing maturity and capability of mind to decide for themselves. The ceremony in the Catholic Church generally encompasses a “Sponsor” for the Child, and often a God Parent undertakes this role. This closes the circle from Baptism and Christening as the children now freely choose to ‘Confirm’ those earlier commitments made on their behalf.

How is it celebrated?

The Ceremony is commemorated with a Church Mass followed by a large family meal and gathering, and the giving of gifts. On many occasions the Parents have kept a variety of items from the Christening/Baptism and Holy Communion Ceremonies, and present to their Child their Prayer Book or Bible, Rosary Beads and/or Crucifix.

For the extended family and friends, gifts are more varied and many seek to commemorate the day with personal gift choices.

Appropriate Gifts

* Crucifix / Cross or Heart Necklaces, Bracelets or Charms.
* Picture Frames, personalised or a little more special than the usual fare are often given.
* Pearl Bracelets or Necklaces have always been a popular choice.
* Savings boxes, and Pledge Pins (alcohol abstention) have also retained their popularity (found in Catholic Church shops)
* School bags are also a practical and appropriate gift as they often mark the transition from primary to secondary levels in a school year.
* Money is also generally given but may be frowned upon by some.

First Holy Communion – What to buy

London Zu has shops in both Chiswick and Twickenham and both areas boast a healthy Catholic population. As such, every year in April, we are constantly asked for advice on what is a suitable First Holy Communion gift.

When talking to our customers many remember their own childhood experiences of the rosary beads they received and lost from Auntie Mary. Or the icons that scared them by their bedsides.  And of course, the “Communion Money” they received on that special day.  Indeed in Ireland, unspent “Communion Money” is a well worn metaphor for the over-thrifty habits a particular person may have. However today, whilst a rosary bracelet or necklace may be occasionally handed down, or a Crucifix might be placed in the children’s room, the Sacrament of the Eucharist and its significance to the Christian, and especially Catholic Traditions are often more vaguely interpreted.

What is ‘First Holy Communion’?

The “First” is the first receipt of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, which for Catholics is the second of the Seven Sacraments, mirroring those actions and guidance of Jesus at the Last Supper – and whilst for many denominations the symbolic mirroring ends there, for the practicing Catholic the belief that Christ is truly present through the mystery of ‘substantiation’ is one the cornerstones of the ritual’s significance.

How is it celebrated?

It is universally celebrated as a large family event. including a church ceremony where the girls are usually presented in white dresses and veils – symbolizing their innocent purity – and the boys are dressed in their new ‘Sunday Best’  or new uniforms.

What is a traditional gift?

Traditionally gifts of a religious nature were given (Rosary Beads or Prayers Books or Icons), and indeed treasured and kept through a life of practice. Today, many family members and friends give gifts of a more diverse nature. Money is still most common, and often enclosed with a small gift and a card. For a seven to eight year old, this is an exciting time.

What is a suitable modern day gift?

Typical gifts for a First Holy Communion today are : –

* A first Pearl Bracelet or Necklace (Girls)
* A Silver/Gold Cross or Crucifix on a Chain (Unisex)
* A Savings Box (Unisex)
* A Photo Frame to commemorate the occasion (Unisex)
* A Photo Album (Unisex)
* A Heart Necklace (Girls)
* A Charm Bracelet with First Charm (Girls)

* A Guardian Angel Pin (Unisex)

As part of the ritual of growing up within the Christian Tradition, this is a significant rite of passage for both the child and the parents. It often marks a transitional time and an increased rapidity towards young adolescence. Money in their pockets, savings boxes or bank accounts, the child begins the early days of decision making, and God Parents who’ve often had little to do in the early years can find themselves happily getting involved in their young charges lives once more. They are perhaps our true wonder years.

London Zu – Pearls, Girls and Wedding Jewellery

As the wedding season begins again, it’s time for us to stock up on the wedding pearls and create new wedding jewellery designs for 2012. Our jewellery studio is already busy with its first bespoke order working with colour swatches of bridesmaids dresses to create the perfect pearl necklace, pearl earrings and pearl bracelet sets.

Its a fine balance between creating the perfect wedding jewellery that the bride is proud to adorn her bridesmaids with whilst also designing the perfect brides jewellery which outshines the bridesmaids set.  Another challenge is to create something lovely even when the colour swatches for the bridesmaid dresses may be somewhat garish. Well we aim to please.

And what about the wedding gifts, well it’s a tricky area but we are slowly building up a great collection of wedding gifts for all budgets. Big Tomato have released some great designs in ceramic ware with red and pink love heart motifs and titles such as ‘home is where the heart is’ and’ there’s no place like home’ just perfect for the new couple and their new home together.

Tales from the Earth are always worth considering with their sterling silver momentos to celebrate those special occasions in life, such as a wedding. And of course we can’t forget cufflinks for the groom and best man to show off the snazzy wedding suit.

We know that organising a wedding is a mammoth job and it’s important not to forget all the people that help make it possible along the way, but that can get expensive, so keep to a budget and choose cleverly.

personalised keyring is a great gift for all the boys involved in the wedding processes, it’s a practical gift that can be used (which men love, they don’t understand gifts that are just pretty with no use) but at the same time you can make it personal by adding their name or initial, plus there are 5 colour ways to choose from so each one is slightly different. They are presented in a gift box and look great.

For the girls, you have the option of jewellery or you could put together little gift bags of pretty girlie things, keep to a budget by selecting small and inexpensive.

Have a fabulous wedding day! xxxx

London Zu Gemstone Life Bracelets

Hot from the studio are our fabulous Life Bracelets from Jacques Storm jewellery.

What are Life bracelets?  I hear you ask. Life bracelets are slim bead bracelets made up of indvidual hand made silver beads and semi precious stones. Each one is unique and each design is slightly different so no two people will ever wear the same one. Each Life bracelet represents the various walks of life depending on the semi precious stone such as health, happiness and love. And which one of us doesn’t lifeblneed some help along the way sometimes.

I’m currently wearing Rose Quartz (love and friendship), Amazonite (inner strength) and yellow Jasper (good fortune). All definitely great choices but if I’m honest I chose them because they are soooo pretty.

Life bracelets are designed to sit alongside your other jewellery or as London Zu customers seem to be choosing alongside each other in colour collections.

They also look fantastic alongside our silk and silver friendship bracelets. S925BR760khakiWith so many to choose from which one will be yours?
